Golden Gods Screening Fiesta 2010

On Saturday May 22 2010, Revolver Magazine and Tones of Death brought together hundreds of Metaleros to Fontana's Bar, for the premiere of the second edition of the Epiphone Revolver Golden God Awards. The night also featured a live set by Virginia's Thrash Metal masters Municipal Waste, who were joined by Attake and Ramming Speed, for a vulgar display of Metal. Nights like this one proof that Heavy Music is alive and well!

Speaking of nights that proof how strong Heavy Music is at present time, on April 8 of this year, Revolver Magazine pulled out the black carpet "literally" and welcomed all of Heavy Music's 666 list to the second edition of the Revolver Golden God Awards. That night definitely made Lucifer very proud, as Ozzy, Rob Halford, Lemmy Kilmister, Slash, Dave Grohl, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Corey Taylor and many other rock-stars paraded into the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. The appearance that will go down in history though, is the one from the late Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.). As we all know Dio lost his battle with cancer recently, and the Revolver Golden Gods marked his last public appearance. That night Ronnie James Dio was honored with the Liquid Metal Golden God Award for best vocalist.

We had a chance to talk to Revolver's Editor in Chief Brandon Geist and to Revolver's Creative Director Josh Bernstein, about the award show, the state of Heavy Music, the magazine and also about the great Ronnie James Dio. Here is what went down:

The Heavy Metal community is in shock, after hearing about the death of Paul Gray from Slipknot. Regardless, of what happens with Slipknot, our thoughts and prayers are with Paul's family and the entire Slipknot camp. So crank up some Slipknot and lose your mind! \m/

SLIPKNOT: Original, Unmatched and Dangerous!

It was 1999, and I remember going to a record store in Bonn, Germany, called Mr. Music. This is were I spent most of my allowance during my high school years. My brother Igor and I would go there weekly, since the store clerk (Swen) was always hooking us up with new killer music. In one of those visits Swen pulled out the first Slipknot VHS, which is titled "Welcome To Our Neighborhood". He tells me in a thick German accent: "Joseph, you have to check this out! It will blow your mind away!"

As soon as I got home, I sneaked into my parents room while my mom was running some errands and watched the tape over and over again. I couldn't believe my eyes, not only were this guys scary looking and intriguing. But they sounded like an orchestra from hell. "Welcome To Our Neighborhood" contains footage from their first appearance at Ozzfest, as well as one on one interviews with the band. This was back when Ozzfest was a full-blown tour and it travelled all over the country. In other words, Ozzfest gave Slipknot their big break!

After watching this video every day after school, one day Igor calls me and says: "Joe, Slipknot is playing in Cologne and we have to go!" It was a Friday in the Fall of 1999, and the day we had been so eagerly waiting for, had finally arrived. To be honest, I had a feeling of fear and excitement of what I was about to experience. After strolling through town, we finally arrived at the suburbs of Cologne. We went inside this small club, called "The Kantine". The club was packed and everyone was pumped to see Slipknot!

As soon as the lights were dimmed and the Intro for Sic started, the place erupted! The band members start coming out, one by one. I remember that the stage was too small for 9 insane guys plus all their instruments, to be on that stage at the same time. As a result, the guys kept bumping into each other. This also meant that they kept knocking equipment down, which made the sound horrendous! All this elements only made the band angrier and the fans were feeding from that aggression. As a result, everyone went ape shit during their entire set. I think I lost my mind that night, and never got it back.

After the show we met and hung out with most of the band and they were some of the coolest artists I have ever met. I immediately was hooked to Slipknot's musical power and ever since that day I consider Slipknot one of my favorite bands. I had the chance to catch their first show ever at Madison Square Garden (hopefully not their last), which was also my first time at The Garden, and that performance definitely went on the record books.

The Heavy Metal community is in shock, after hearing about the death of Paul Gray from Slipknot. I honestly don't see Slipknot continuing without Paul, simply because what makes Slipknot so special, is the contribution of each and every single band member. Regardless, of what happens with Slipknot, our thoughts and prayers are with Paul's family and the entire Slipknot camp. So crank up some Slipknot and lose your mind! \m/

What an idiot!

We didn’t know where to start with this moron, but let’s do it...

First of all, what the hell was he thinking taking a picture naked or walking around naked with such a small penis, big stomach and ugly face? What a moron!

Secondly, what is this douchebag thinking drinking beer when he looks like that? Again... Moron Alert!!

Lastly, what a nightmare it is to be like this guy, he’s got NO penis at all — not an Asian small penis, but NO PENIS at all — I’m guessing if there was an accomplishment for smallest penis in world: he would get it.

Nurses aren't supposed to laugh...

"Of course I won't laugh," said the nurse.  "I'm a professional.  In over twenty years I've never laughed at a patient."

"Okay then," said the man, as he proceeded to drop his trousers, revealing the tiniest 'man thingy' the nurse had ever seen.  Length and width, it couldn't have been bigger than a AAA battery.

Unable to control herself, the nurse started giggling, then fell to the floor laughing. Five minutes later she was able to struggle to her feet and regain her composure.

"I am so sorry," she said.  "I don't know what came over me.  On my honor as a nurse and a lady, I promise it won't happen again.  Now, tell me, what seems to be the problem?"

"It's swollen," the man replied.

The Nurse ran out of the room!

RONNIE JAMES DIO (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010)

Today is a very sad day in Rock N Roll. Legendary singer Ronnie James Dio has passed away, after battling with stomach cancer. Ronnie will always be remembered as the singer of legendary bands such as: Dio, Black Sabbath (Heaven & hell) and Rainbow. He is also credited as the creator of the "devil horns" that all rockers and fans throw on a daily basis when something rocks!

His wife and manager Wendy Dio made the following statement to Blabbermouth:

"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all.

We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us.

Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss.

Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."

Here is one of the last interviews Ronnie James Dio ever did, it took place at the Revolver Golden God Awards this past April where he received the Liquid Metal "Best Vocalist Award."

Here is Ronnie James Dio, receiving the award:

NEW YORK HARD CORE!

When I think about what brought me to New York, the first thing that comes to my mind is New York Hard Core. Growing up in Colombia in the mid 90's, back when Pablo Escobar and crew controlled the country through acts of violence. I experienced lots of hardship by watching my own country, become the country of fear. I was around 15 years old when I first heard downset, I know downset are from LA but once I was hooked on the Hard Core movement, I started to listen to New York Hard Core through bands like Sick Of It All, Madball, Agnostic Front, Biohazard, Vision of Disorder and a whole bunch of other bands (mostly through mix tapes).

The Hard Core movement soon became an outlet to a lot of us in Colombia, to the point that a lot of Hard Core bands started to emerge in Colombia. One of those bands was Raiz, who are considered one of the top Hard Core bands to ever come from Colombia. Once Hard Core became part of my life I realized that it was not just a genre of music, it was a family unit! I would go to a show and I would always run into the same crew. And even though we didn't know each other personally, we would always talk about Hard Core, the violent times in Colombia, and share a drink or two or three.

In 1997 I came to visit New York City for the first time and one of the first places I visited was the New York Hard Core mecca: CBGB's. As soon as I stepped inside the bar, the old smell of beer, the darkness of the place and the punk rock vibe had me hooked on the New York Hard Core culture. From that moment on I knew I had to live in New York City one day.

In 1999 I went to the Dynamo Open Air festival in Eindhoven, Holland. The three day weekend was packed with killer acts such as Metallica, Fear Factory, Biohazard, Madball and a bunch of other bands. On the last day of the festival at the main stage, the mighty Biohazard became the first New York Hard Core band I ever saw on live. This same day was the first time that I experienced a full blown circle pit. Then is when I knew that Hard Core was going to be part of my life forever.

Fast forward to 2004, when after driving for 6 hours from upstate New York, I finally arrived in New York Hard Core City. Soon after, I started going to Hard Core shows and realized that it was a very eclectic musical style. I also realized that the same fraternity I experienced in Colombia at Hard Core shows, also existed in New York and it was even stronger. By then Hard Core had become a worldwide musical form and bands like Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Madball and Biohazard were playing shows all over the world.

Today, when I tell people that I like Hard Core, they look at me funny or try to convince me that Hard Core is dead. All I got to say is that if Hard Core is really dead, then why are all the top New York Hard Core bands still around? Agnostic Front are still crushing, Sick Of It All just released one of the best records of their career, Cro Mags are still going strong, Madball is working on a new record and playing shows constantly and the same goes with Biohazard and a ton of other legendary bands.

I think it often happens that once a person switches from one musical style to another, they try to undermine the previous style they liked and those who keep it real by sticking to their guns and not falling victims of musical trends. All this is fine with me and I respect it, but it clearly means that they don't understand what Hard Core really is. I personally did not start listening to Hard Core so I could become part of a crew, or to act tough. Hard Core became an outlet of aggression and suffering that has played a huge role in my life.

And yes I like Metal, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, Alternative Music and various other musical styles. I consider myself an open minded person that listens to a particular musical style because it moves me and not because it is the hot trend to follow. I am way too old for that bullshit! When I started this whole movement called Horns Up Rocks one of my goals was to teach all the narrow minded music fans, that there are plenty of other musical styles that are worth considering and respecting. I also decided to give Hard Core the respect it deserves. Tomorrow, when I am covering the Black N Blue Bowl (Super Bowl of Hard Core) it will all make sense to me. I predict a packed house, with Hard Core fans from all over the country with the same goal in mind: pay homage to all the bands that will be performing and have the time of our lives. Just remember that HARD CORE STILL LIVES!

I had the honor of interviewing both Freddy Madball and Cousin Joe, right by East Village Radio after their weekly "Black N Blue Takeover" radio show and we talked about Hard Core and the upcoming "Black N Blue" Bowl.

You can check it out right here!
