I make many mistakes. Many mistakes. So I always get nervous when people speak about something that sounds like a role model, because I don’t know if I’ve been a great role model myself. I don’t think I have in certain aspects of my life.
I’m not going to wallow in self-pity and not live my life. There are always going to be some falls in life for everybody, no matter what career you have. You have to roll with the punches and keep going.
There were certain designers who hadn’t used models of color in their shows, and Christy [Turlington] and Linda [Evangelista] said to them, ‘If you don’t take Naomi, then you don’t get us.’ My friends and comrades stuck up for me. That doesn’t happen in fashion.
Look, I’m controversial. It’s not that people don't know who I am. . .if people want to work with me. If they don't, they don't.
None of us actually cared about this word supermodel . . .But what we did like was being together . . . We would all have our rooms next to one another—it was like a dorm on tour.
Earlier this month, the third episode of the No Mercy Metal Showcase took place at Crash Mansion here in New York City. In case you haven't heard of the No Mercy Metal Showcase, it is a collaboration between New York Hard Rock promoters CT Tamura and Mike Sankuri from Gotham Rocks, and Tim Martinez (A.K.A. DJ Tim No 37). The whole concept is to offer up and coming bands a platform, where they can perform their music in front of music related websites, radio stations, and other outlets.
As sponsors of the No Mercy Metal Showcase, we are meant to pick a band that stands out and tell you all about them. This time around we want to tell you about the band Eyes Like Cyanide.
Formed in 2008 by singer Chris Miralrio, his vision for Eyes Like Cyanide was to create a unique blend of sounds. In order to do this, he consciously started working with musicians from different backgrounds. Today Eyes Like Cyanide has members from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Michigan, which results in a well crafted band with musicians who add different flavors to the mix.
Eyes Like Cyanide will get any crowd moving with their intensity and passion. They are working day in and day out on creating something that is completely unique, and that will make them stand out strong. Their focus is to keep playing shows all over the tri-state area and to hopefully land a record deal, so that they can take their music to the next level. Eyes Like Cyanide are ready for you, are you ready for Eyes Like Cyanide?
Here is an interview we conducted at the most recent No Mercy Metal Showcase, starring CT Tamura from Gotham Rocks and Chris Miralrio from Eyes Like Cyanide. Enjoy!
When most people hear the name Richard Christy, they immediately think of the stunt guy from the Howard Stern Show on Sirius Satellite Radio. For us Metaleros, Richard Christy is synonymous to Heavy Metal drumming. Believe it or not, Richard has been a professional Heavy Metal drummer since 1995. In this time span, he has played in legendary bands like Death and Iced Earth, and recently he formed a band with Tim "Ripper" Owens called Charred Walls of the Damned.
Anyone who has met Richard Christy knows that not only is he very talented, but also a gentleman in every sense of the word. This might be hard to grasp after hearing and seeing his stunts on the Howard Stern Show, but it is all just a show. One thing that is evident, is that the same passion that took Richard to Heavy Metal heaven (or hell), also took him to radio elite. After all, being a drummer in a Heavy Metal band and working on the best radio show in history take a lot of discipline, passion and perseverance.
Recently, we chatted with Richard Christy outside of the Sirius XM studios, about Hixonfest 2010, his gig at the Howard Stern Show, and also about his new band Charred Walls of the Damned. Here is what we predict to be another hit delivered to you by Horns Up Rocks!
On Friday night, Madison Square Garden welcomed the "BLACKDIAMONDSKYE" tour. The national tour features Alice In Chains, deftones and Mastodon. A lineup that is simply unmatched by any tour thus far in 2010. Both 3 bands represent different times in music, in which they have managed to become huge influences on many bands thanks to their statuses as flag holders. As we all know, Madison Square Garden is the dream venue for any musician to perform at, and Alice In Chains, deftones and Mastodon all made history together. Let us tell you about this magical night.
Earlier this year, we ran into Mastodon's singer/bassist Troy Sanders and drummer Brann Dailor at the Slipknot show at Madison Square Garden and told them: "You guys will be on that stage very soon!" Both of them sighed and smiled. Fast forward 7 months and they are opening the "BLACKDIAMONDSKYE" tour at the worlds largest arena. Thankfully we arrived just as Mastodon were starting their set with their song "Naked Burn", and we were very happy to witness this historical event. Mastodon warmed up the crowd with songs like "Divinations" and "Colony of Birchmen". The band kept blowing peoples minds throughout their 8 song set, which was concluded with "Blood and Thunder".
Then it was time for Sacramento's deftones to take over center stage at Madison Square Garden. From the get-go the band was on point and Chino looked and sounded phenomenal. It was evident that Chino needed to change his lifestyle in order to improve his performance-ship and after hearing members of the crowd say: "The deftones are back, Chino is definitely back!" It was evident that the band is in fact, back in style.
They opened their set with "Rocket Skates" and got the crowd grooving, then they got into Around the Fur mode and played "Around the Fur", "Be Quiet and Drive", and "My Own Summer". After a few new songs from their latest album "Diamond Eyes", the band played all the crowds favorites like "Change (In The House of Flies)", "Engine No. 9" and they left in a very high note after playing "7 Words". The deftones owned Madison Square Garden, and we expect them back within the next few years on their own headlining tour.
Then it was time for Alice In Chains to headline Madison Square Garden. As many of us know they are missing their original front-man Layne Staley, who died in 2002 from an overdose. In our opinion they have proved all skeptics wrong, and Alice In Chains did justice by bringing in William DuVall to replace Staley. Any doubt doubt anyone had on his performance before their performance, was quickly washed away by his amazing performance-ship and original stage antics.
The band kicked off their set with "Them Bones", which immediately made the crowd lose their minds. During the next hour and a half, Alice In Chains performed songs like "No Excuses", "Down in a Hole", "Rooster", "Man In The Box" and ended the amazing music night with "Would?". What impressed us the most about Alice In Chains, was the fact that all their older songs sounded timeless, their stage presence was intact and the light show was simple yet colorful.
If you get a chance to catch the "BLACKDIAMONDSKY" tour, do your ears a favor and take them to this sonically perfect tour.
Here is a clip of Alice In Chains opening with "Them Bones":
New Orleans has always been known for its influence in music and its multilingual cross-cultural heritage. This ever-changing region of the United States gave birth to Jazz music, and is universally known for its cuisine. Recently they became known for their NFL football team, thanks to the New Orleans Saints victory over the Indianapolis Colts at this years Super Bowl in Miami. What does all this have to do with Heavy Music? Well, NOLA is the birthplace of one of the best bands in the country, which band are we talking about? DOWN!
Formed in New Orleans in the early 90's, Down started as a side project formed by Pantera's own Philip Anselmo, COC's Pepper Keenan, Crowbar's Kirk Windstein, Eyehategod's Jimmy Bower and former Crowbar bassist Todd Strange. After the demise of Pantera, Philip Anselmo recruited Pantera's bassist Rex Brown, and got Pepper, Kirk and Jimmy on board for the rebirth of one of the best "super-groups" in Heavy Music today. They immediately entered the studio and recorded one of the best sounding records of the last 10 years: Down II "A Bustle in Your Hedgerow". Soon after the completion of the album, they went on the road for what they called "An Evening With Down". The concept was to have videos from legendary bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zepellin and Metallica play before Down's set, instead of having opening acts.
In 2006, Down went to Europe for their first European tour and documented it all on video. The end result is a 130 minute DVD featuring 17 live songs, and plenty of behind the scenes footage. This is what guitarist Pepper Keenan had to say about the DVD:
"The DVD is an in-depth look at what five boys from the wrong side of the tracks can achieve when motivated by the will to escape hard times, fueled by an unexplainable quest to destroy live and be embraced by the love of fans whom we had not had the pleasure of meeting yet. This is how it's supposed to be: rock solid."
"Diary of a Mad Band", will be released in the United States on October 5th through Down Records/ADA. Here is the OFFICIAL trailer:
Make sure you support the underground music scene and buy this amazing DVD.
New York Hardcore legends Madball have released drummer Jay Weinberg in the middle of their tour in Canada. Apparently Weinberg, did not fit into the lifestyle that the band represents. When we saw them at the Black N Blue Bowl earlier this year, he did seem to be out of place. Here is the official statement from Madball's front-man Freddy Cricien:
"I'm letting Jay go in Canada because I just feel he doesn't represent this band well on a character level. It would go against my own code of ethics to keep him around. Not saying he's a bad drummer. I won't take that away from him. But the reality is - he has a lot to learn about paying dues, and about life in general. Granted, he is a kid, but I'm not sure that he'll ever be built for this particular lifestyle. I wish him the best of luck, but the MADBALL machine rolls on!"
Madball who are on tour with Comeback Kid on the "Through The Noise Tour", will continue the tour with a replacement drummer (who will be announced soon). The bands future plans, which include a European tour with NYHC legends Sick Of It All, and the release of their new album titled "Empire" (due October 12th), will remain on schedule.

As we all know Mutiny Within is one of the rising forces of the new generation of American Heavy Metal. Recently, their drummer left the band and a few temporary drummers have been playing with them on the road. After some Visa issues with their current temporary drummer, the band decided to pull the plug on their tour with Nevermore. Here is the bands official statement:
"We’re sorry to say that despite our best efforts, our plans to hit the road with Nevermore this month have sadly fallen through. As many of you know, we have been looking forward to being a part of this tour and seeing all of our fans again. However, we feel that in order to deliver our best performance every night, our search for a full time drummer has to take priority. Instead of hitting the road with a temporary member again, we want to take the time to properly audition and rehearse."
"We did have another drummer lined up to accompany us on this tour, but due to a slow visa process, rehearsal time was cut to an unworkable amount. Mutiny Within is not a 5 piece band and we need to find our 6th member to bring you guys what you deserve. We’re so sorry to anybody who was looking forward to seeing us on this tour, but we cannot tour without a drummer. We know people will be upset and we apologize, but know that nobody will be more upset about this than we are. On a positive note, this gives us the time to work on brand new songs, which we’ve been looking forward to doing for some time."
"If anybody knows a suitable drummer or you are yourself, then please contact us at . We hope you all understand this and will continue to support us. Keep checking back for further updates, thanks everyone.” -Mutiny Within

You may be thinking that you misread the title of this post. New York Thrash Metal? Many people out there are under the misconception that Thrash Metal is no longer prevalent, specially in New York City. A city known for Hardcore Punk and Hip Hop, but definitely not Thrash Metal. Well, this hasn't stopped this band from going against the grain, something that has been very natural for The Judas Syndrome. So far it has proven to be a very positive move and since the release of their debut album "Underneath Blood Skies", their craft is spreading quickly. We predict a very interesting time for them within the next year.
Their latest album is not only a balls out furious Thrash Metal album, it also represents the power that New York City is known for. The Judas Syndrome features Yankees aficionado Phil Vibez, who is also the former vocalist of Irate. Joining Vibez in his new venture are guitarists Chris Oblivion and Ian "Kunki" Syndrome, bassist Tony Bones, and drummer Tommy "Coney" Warchild. If you know The Judas Syndrome already, you know the impact they leave every time they step on a stage. And if you haven't heard this phenomenal band yet, you will soon!
Within the last few months The Judas Syndrome have been very busy spreading their craft; they have recently opened for legendary bands like Vision Of Disorder, Despised Icon and Nile. The band has also released a phenomenal video for their song "Death of the Soul", which was directed by Frankie Nasso and former God Forbid guitarist Dallas Coyle. Additionally the band has been on constant rotation on Sirius XM Liquid Metal, on WSOU 89.5 FM, and on Music Choice. Today they debut their video on MTV's Headbangers Ball!
After their stellar performance at New York City's Gramercy Theater, we had the chance to interview The Judas Syndrome boys about the past, the present and the future of the band. This is what went down.
5 years after her last official album, the extraordinarily Extraordinary Machine, Billboard.com is reporting that Fiona Apple is prepping the release of a new album by Spring 2011. First came the news from a recent profile in Modern Drummer Magazine of Fiona Apple's drummer and co-producer Charley Drayton, on the article they state that "Drayton, who has toured with Apple since 2006, co-produced and mixed the record, as well as played on it".
And then the second news about the album came from singer-songwriter Michelle Branch, who twitted that "Hate to brag but I heard a couple new Fiona Apple tracks today. Amazing" and also that "Apple's new material should be worth the wait", she shared this info from her Twitter account on Sept. 12, which was one day before Fiona's 33rd birthday.
The tittle of the album and an exact release date is still not known, Spring means the album could be release on either March, April or May 2011, but obviously these are big, big news and I can't wait to hear new music from Fiona!
Brandon Flowers talked to GQ UK magazine about his new solo album, touring with and without The Killers and more.
Why a solo album now and what's the status on the band:
"I've always written on the road and just tried to write as much as I can. It scares me, the thought of good songs getting passed up. I had kind of an explosion of ideas while we were touring for Day & Age. A combination of that and a couple of the guys were talking about how they wanted a pretty good break after this album. So it seemed like the perfect time to do it. I've said it before - I'd prefer that it was the Killers doing this. But I can't help that they want to have a break and I can't help that I want to do this. Everyone's looking into it but there's no wedge in the Killers. It's just they need a break and I can't blame them. We talk every now and then. Ronnie sends funny e-mails and stuff like that."
On touring behind the new album:
"I was with people who are pretty creative: producers and guys who aren't afraid to tell me, 'That sucks,' or, 'That's fantastic.' I'm excited [about touring alone], but a little bit nervous. I don't have the catalogue of Killers songs to support me but these new songs are solid. There's a song called 'Crossfire,' which I feel is as good as anything I've ever done."
His proudest musical achivement:
"Lyrically, there's a song on this album called 'From Nogales To Magdalena.' I feel like it's the best lyric I've ever written. It's really just strong when it comes to getting the story across. It's about a pilgrimage in Mexico that takes place every October, where people walk from Nogales to Magdalena. St Francis is going to grant them this thing that they're walking for, whether they're walking for forgiveness or to have a prayer answered or to keep their jobs so they can take care of their family."
Why "Flamingo":
"It's a very iconic image, for me and captures the mythology of Las Vegas. Flamingo was one of the first casinos that opened up. It's a very prominent road in Las Vegas, a road that I have gone down, up and down many times, many miles."
His solo heroes:
"People who have broken away from bands, or just in general? I like a lot of dudes. I've always loved David Bowie. I like Sting. Phil Collins."
On being humble:
"In the early days they tried to pin us as very arrogant. They were looking for a new Liam Gallagher and it didn't work out. I feel like now it's pretty positive, just in the people that I meet and come into contact with. It's a respect that we've kind of lasted, I guess. Outlasted all the hype and everything."
Having said that....:
"People say that bombastic magic happens when we play together, that there's something special about us four playing. I'm so close to it that I don't know."
Today is the release date of Pantera's Cowboys From Hell 20th Anniversary Edition. In order to celebrate this day, Pantera's vocalist Philip Anselmo got online and chatted with fans worldwide via Ustream. During the chat Philip looked healthy, strong and was very eloquent with all of his answers. As usual, he was very honest and comical. When asked what his recipe for looking younger and younger is, he jokingly said: "next thing you know, I will be back in an egg. My mother used to call me a hatch." Since we know not everyone was able to tune in, here is a rundown of what went down during Anselmo's chat with Pantera's fans. Uncensored and real, just like the way it should be!
Why did you decide to become part of a Heavy Metal band?
There is no energy like the Heavy Metal energy!
What is your favorite track from Cowboys From Hell?
Philip Anselmo: It has to be Primal Concrete Sledge! It is a brutal song that came out of nowhere. We where in between takes while recording Cowboys From Hell, and Vince started playing this beat that made all of us lose our minds. Dimebag started playing this crazy guitar part, I started scribbling some lyrics. And next thing you know we had a whole song. It was magic!
How does it feel to have been part of Pantera?
It was a full way split when the four of us would get in a room and jam. All of us! The only way to describe it is: "Modulistic terror, a vast sadistic feast, the only way to exit, is going piece by piece." (SLAYER lyric from Piece by Piece)
How was the lyrical process during Cowboys From Hell?
It was up to me to make sure the lyrics fit into the song. But I would be open to the bands opinions, and sometimes we even voted to see if a lyric was right for a particular song. Specially during Cowboys From Hell.
What was your personal inspiration and motivation to switching gears into a more ass shredding sound?
Gradual but honest things. When I joined Pantera, we made it be known that we were going for a more aggressive sound. The thing is that at the time we had a war with the clubs. If you wanted to be part of the club scene, they made you dress with Spandex like Motley Crue since that was popular in the 80's. But that did not last long.
Where you aware that this album would change Heavy Metal forever?
No Way! We knew we were great, but we had a lot to prove. Cowboys From Hell was our introduction to the world. We had to prove ourselves every night, show after show.
During that time, which vocalists influenced your vocal style?
I found a lot of beauty in Thrash metal vocalists like Paul Ballof from Exodus and Dark Angel's Don Doty.
What inspired the lyrics from Cemetery Gates?
There was a friend who had died in NOLA and it had a real heavy impact within my group of friends. When I wrote the lyrics I did not want them to be too personal, because that can be cheesy. I also had to make sure that the lyrics would not take away from the song, because that was one of our best songs.
What are your top five songs of all time?
Man, that is a fucking hard question! But if I have to pick five songs, they are: At Dawn They Sleep by Slayer, The Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin, Drowning Man by U2, Blind by Swans, Painted Black by the Rolling Stones, A Day in the Life by The Beatles, and I got one more, The Prophet Song by Queen.
What is your favorite Dimebag solo from Cowboys From Hell?
It has to be The Sleep! It is a ripping solo, with so much feel, it is a great song!
What is your favorite Black Sabbath album?
That is another tough question, I feel like two lovers feeling like a fool. I have to go with Sabotage and you cannot forget Paranoid!
What song gives you goose-bumps?
David Bowie's Wild Is the Wind.
What is your most meaningful tattoo?
When in doubt, always go with the first! The old PHIL CORE.
Which artists were your main influences when writing lyrics for Pantera?
Definitely Van Halen, some Judas Priest, and even Metallica and Slayer. Metallica made the breakthrough for Thrash Metal bands, but Slayer killed me! Without Slayer I would be a differrent man today!
If you would be 18 years old today, would you try to make it in the music business?
Of course! But its not about making it, it is all in your head. When Far Beyond Driven went number one on Billboard, I was overwhelmed. But also underwhelmed. It is a great honor, but making it is all a state of mind. Put in the work by practicing, spending time in the studio, and definitely get on that fucking stage!
What can you tell us about your upcoming autobiography? Would say it is a cautionary tale? Why should people read Phil Anselmo's story?
It is a cautionary tale about an interesting journey, with certain stories that nobody has heard before. You will understand me better if you read it. When you write a book it is a self examination. When you start getting old, you will see how much you learn from when you were younger. It will not be your average rock autobiography!
What was your first concert?
When I was young I would go see local acts. But my first big show was KISS in the 6th grade, a good friend of my family who was Kiss's tour manager took me. Around that time I also saw Jethro Tull, and I even OZZY with a shaved head and a wig on! INSANE!
Did you ever experience stage freight?
When I was a kid I was always the youngest in the bands I played in, so there was some apprehension. With Pantera we had to work our way up. Being in the Cowboys From Hell tour taught us a lot. We had to build our ground. Once you have that microphone on your hand, you simply melt the stage freight away!
Which of your songs is the hardest song to sing?
It has to be The Great Southern Trendkill! I had no time to breath on that one, since I had to fill in all the gaps. I learned my lesson hard on that one.
What are your favorite memories of the Cowboys From Hell tour?
Hanging out with Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus was mayhem every night! The funniest story was when Dimebag ruffled Yngwie Malmsteen's feathers. It was hilarious, everyone was inhebriated. They wanted to kick his ass!
How was it to reach Platinum status with Pantera?
It was a great achievement! Very unexpected. I am a pessimist when it comes to getting something good with my music because the music industry is very rough!
How did you end up doing guest vocals on Vision of Disorder's Imprint?
I toured with Tim Williams from VOD, and I became friends with the band when they would come see us in New York. They asked me to do it, so I did! VOD DAMN! I hope they are doing good, they are great guys.
What are your favorite boxers?
Great question! Got to go with Mohammed Ali, Rocky Marciano, MikeTyson in his prime, Lennox Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran (manos de piedra), and Tomas Hitman.
What was your first gig ever?
Speaking of stage freight. I was terrified! It was in NOLA at an all ages show. I was wearing Jeans, a Van Halen t-shirt, and a bandana on my neck. Once I gripped that microphone stand, I did not let go! I plugged my microphone into a guitar FX pedal. Then at the end of the a Black Sabbath song we were covering, I hit the guitar pedal. It was horrific!
What band did you want to play in, but couldn’t?
KISS. What is your favorite NFL team?
Please! I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana! So my team has always been the New Orleans SAINTS. I would stand in front of the TV as a toddler and watched them lose all the time! But now look at this t-shirt (shows Saints championship t-shirt), world champions! And we are looking good this year too.
What message do you have for your fans?
I love you all! Celebrate this special day! Just have an awesome time! Be happy, be strong!!! I love you all!!! This is Philip Anselmo signing off!
To celebrate Fiona's 33rd birthday I decided to post what I consider the sweetiest breakup ballad ever written.
I opened my eyes While you were kissing me once more than once And you looked as sincere as a dog Just as sincere as a dog does, When it's the food on your lips with which it's in love
I bet you could never tell That I knew you didn't know me that well It is my fault you see You never learned that much from me
Oh you silly stupid pastime of mine You were always good for a rhyme And from the first, to the last time, the signs Said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started It said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started
I took off my glasses While you were yelling at me once more than once So as not to see you see me react Should've put 'em, should've put 'em on again So I could see you see me sincerely yelling back
I bet your fortressed face Belied your fort of lace It is by the grace of me You never learned what I could see
Oh you silly stupid pastime of mine You were always good for a rhyme And from the first to all the last times, all the signs Said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started It said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started

On Friday September 10th, we experienced history in the making at the Official Pantera 20th Anniversary Edition release party at Duff's Brooklyn. It was like being at a Pantera show in the mid 90's. People were losing their minds, losing their voices and losing their sanity song after song. From the moment we arrived Pantera's Cowboys From Hell was blasting on the PA and we ran into many Pantera fans from all over the tri-state area. Once the first beer was in hand, it was all about Pantera's legacy. The legacy that was established thanks to the bands passion and the well crafted music that Pantera created throughout their tremendous career.
Cowboys From Hell was released on July 24, 1990, and it was Pantera's 5th studio album. After many years of trial and error, Pantera was signed by Atco Records after the band found their sound, their image and the right moment to bring Heavy Metal back to the surface. Produced, engineered and mixed by Terry Date and Pantera, the album is a sonic assault that quickly gets the crowd grooving and headbanging. This is exactly what happened at Duff's Brooklyn!
There was definitely something in the air that night, a vibe that brought people together in unity. It reminded us of when Pantera played in 1991 at the Monsters of Rock festival in Russia, in front of 1.6 million people. That day Pantera shared the stage with Metallica, AC/DC and Aerosmith in what is considered one of the largest music festivals in history. Pantera outperformed every single band that day and made a statement that they were ready to rise the flag of Metal for many years to come.
Today the impact of Cowboys From Hell is evident throughout the entire Heavy Music scene, there is no artists or fan that doesn't own this classic record. If you ask anyone to choose their favorite song, they will have a hard time picking just one song. Cowboys From Hell is one the best records of all time, and 20 years later it is as relevant as it when it was released. We want to thank the Duff's crew for inviting us to cover the event and all the Pantera fans worldwide.
Here is a promotional clip we produced for the Pantera 20 Year Anniversary Edition, and it features footage from the party at Duff's Brooklyn. ENJOY! \m/

I tell you how I feel, but you don't care I say tell me the truth, but you don't dare You say love is a hell you cannot bear And I say gimme mine back and then go there - for all I care
I got my feet on the ground And I don't go to sleep to dream You got your head in the clouds And you're not at all what you seem This mind, this body And this voice cannot be stifled by your deviantways So don't forget what I told you Don't come around, I got my own hell toraise
I have never been so insulted in all my life I could swallow the seas to wash down all this pride First you run like a fool just to be at my side And now you run like a food But you just run to hide, and I can't abide
I got my feet on the ground And I don't go to sleep to dream You got your head in the clouds And you're not at all what you seem This mind, this body And this voice cannot be stifled by your deviantways So don't forget what I told you Don't come around, I got my own hell toraise
Don't make it a big deal, don't be so sensitive We're not playing a game anymore You don't have to be so defensive Don't you plead me your case, don't bother to explain Don't even show me your face, ''cause it's a crying shame Just go back to the rock from under which you came Take the sorrow you gave and all the stakes you claim - And don't forget the blame
I got my feet on the ground And I don't go to sleep to dream You got your head in the clouds And you're not at all what you seem This mind, this body And this voice cannot be stifled by your deviantways So don't forget what I told you Don't come around, I got my own hell to raise
Sleep To Dream is the second single from Fiona's debut album Tidal (1996), and it was directed by french video and film auteur Stephane Sednoui.
In honor of today's MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS I decided to post the second video from the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, while accepting the 1997 MTV Video Music Award for "Best New Artist" for "Sleep to Dream," she proclaimed: "This world is bullshit, you shouldn't model your life on what you think that we think is cool, and what we're wearing and what we're saying, go with yourself" referring to the mainstream music industry. Host Chris Rock would comment on her speech later on during the program, saying, "That Fiona Apple was mad, huh? Fiona X was up here." Though her comments were generally greeted with cheers and applause at the awards ceremony, the media backlash was immediate.
However, Apple was unapologetic: "I just had something on my mind and I just said it. And that's really the foreshadowing of my entire career and my entire life. When I have something to say, I'll say it." Stand-up comedian Denis Leary included a satire of this speech on his album, Lock 'n Load, titled "A Reading from the Book of Apple". Janeane Garofalo parodied Apple's comments in light of the fact that her video for "Criminal" seemed to reinforce the same celebrity fixation on weight and appearance that Apple condemned. A while after that, both she and Janeane attended the same event, but instead of talking face to face with her the comedianne ignored Fiona all night, Apple responded to these criticisms in an article in Rolling Stone in January 1998 accepting her part of the blame but also by calli Garofalo "a cowardly bitch".
